When reflecting on the seminars that I attended virtually, I have referred to those notes and videos so many times for a reference to help guide my work studies.I also refer to the TechTrends and will continue to use those as a resource for future learning.

I was reading the reflection that I had written. I had written about attending the next conference in Kansas City. I was so ready to go and meet new people in our field. I had just sent in the travel forms when life came walking through the door.  A family situation prevented me from attending the Conference, even virtually.

October 17, 20223

Time: 2:30-3:20 pm-12:30-1:20 pm

Panel Discussion

Rick West, Brigham Young University

Heather Leary, Brigham Young University

Rob Nyland, Air University

Dina Kurzweil, Uniformed Services University of health and Sciences

Ai etc.

  1. What did the presenters talk about?

The presenters presented the book they have all been working on, about Becoming a Learning and Instructional Design Technology Professional.

Everyone who worked on this book was either there in person or online to support their book. Some of the things they talked about were communication, adaptability, Business skills, Military, Education, and experience in the field.

  1. What was the biggest takeaway from the presentation?

A takeaway that I got was that Instructional design is not stationary; in that you can work in the Military for training and their education system.  How important it is to know other skills so that you can be adaptable in the field.

  1. Was the presentation helpful to you? Do you think you will be able to apply it in your practice? Why or why not? Yes, this presentation was helpful to me. It showed me that I can do a lot with instructional design and not feel confined to one area in the field. I am going to apply a lot of the ideas that they give to my practice. When they finish the book, I am going to get it.
  2. If you could give the presenter(s) one piece of constructive feedback, what would it be?

One piece of constructive feedback I would give is that for a graduate student who is entering the field and is looking at where they want to go, they gave a good direction of what Instructional design is and what we do.

Final Reflection

October 24, 2023

  1. What was the best part of the conference for you and why?

The best part of the conference for me was the virtual Session with Andy Gibbions, Elizabeth Boling, MJ Bishop, and Matthew Schmidt. The session started late because of technical issues, but once the session got going, it was really good. It was neat to see how they all worked well together and were quick to explain the theories.

  1. What part of the conference was difficult for you and why?

The part that was difficult for me was some of the technical issues that they were having at the conference. Found out why I didn’t have the Zoom buttons under the sessions in all academic.  They had to manually go into the restoration and manually find me. Once they got the technical issues figured they instantly were able to get my Zoom access to work.

  1. Did you find our morning group meetings beneficial? Why or why not?

The morning sessions were way too early for me, but they worked best for me and my schedule. I had sessions done before my kids were up.

  1. Based on your experience, what are the three trends or issues that you see coming in the field? How do they relate to your current work or what you want to be doing in the future?

Three trends or issues that I see coming.

  1. I can see a trend of AI and ChatGPT becoming a main part of the instructional design field. It is already being used in some classrooms, and if used appropriately, it is a good tool.
  2. Another trend would be to continue to learn when the opportunity is there. Things are always changing and fast. You want to be able to keep up in the Instructional Design
  3. Last trend would go along with learning to practice every chance you get. You don’t want to lose a skill from not practicing those skills.
  4. How has attending this conference affected you as a graduate student? Was it helpful? Was it informative?

It affected me as a graduate student in that I got to see the people that I Just read and learned about in action. I was virtual, but I still got to watch and learn from them. It also puts my future in perspective of where I want to go and do in the future.

The convention was very informative. I tried to go to sessions that let me see most of the field. There was one that didn’t fit what I was looking for well. I stayed and listened to her presentation quickly. Once she was done she dismissed those that wanted to go and didn’t have questions.

I really hope that you offer the convention again. I want to go in person next time so that I can have the experience and meet people.
